The beauty of a box is that you can sit back much farther than a free squat, meaning you can load the hamstring, glutes and lower back a lot more, which translates well when you go back to free squatting.
We never had great results with just putting on briefs and then squatting, like we normally do, to a box and sitting on it. It has to be more than that. We over-exaggerate the movement, making a point in never letting our knees travel forward (our best lifters have their knees move backwards, towards their heel, during their squats).
When most people try this, they end up sitting really far back, and plopping to the box, which is something we don't like. Instead, we stay tight all the way to the box, which means we end up going a bit slower than you're probably used to (on the way down).
You have to start the movement like a goodmorning, by pushing the hips back as far as possible. You flare the knees out only when they begin to break naturally.
As you get closer to the box, continue to sit back, but, flare the knees even harder (again, without letting them come forward one bit). We don't relax on the box, we do pause, albeit while staying tight.
To come off of the box, we drive our upper backs into the bar, flare our knees and squeeze our ass.
It takes time to perform box squats, like this, correctly, and, you won't be as nearly as strong as the typical way box squats are performed, but, it is what makes box squats a great tool.
Here is Matt, our 275'er (who just squatted 955 in his second geared meet, and pulled an easy 725 sumo):

Notice his shin position, and how far he gets his ass back, while keeping the knees out and his back tight. His head is always being pushed into the bar. His box squat form is perfect, and his free squatting is even better.
He gets in the same position (albeit a bit wider) when he pulls. This is 675 from a few months ago:

The big thing is technique, on all lifts, really, it's not a matter of how much weight, or just getting the bar from point A to point B. His form, on everything that he does, is perfect, and it shows in all of his lifts. I have learned a lot from him.
