This current study examined the effect of a 3-week period of sexual abstinence on the neuroendocrine response to masturbation-induced orgasm. Hormonal and cardiovascular parameters were examined in ten healthy adult men during sexual arousal and masturbation-induced orgasm. Blood was drawn continuously and cardiovascular parameters were constantly monitored. This procedure was conducted for each participant twice, both before and after a 3-week period of sexual abstinence. Plasma was subsequently analysed for concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and testosterone concentrations. Orgasm increased blood pressure, heart rate, plasma catecholamines and prolactin. These effects were observed both before and after sexual abstinence. In contrast, although plasma testosterone was unaltered by orgasm, higher testosterone concentrations were observed following the period of abstinence. These data demonstrate that acute abstinence does not change the neuroendocrine response to orgasm but does produce elevated levels of testosterone in males.
The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in sex hormone level in men after ejaculation. The serum testosterone concentrations of 28 male volunteers were investigated daily during abstinence period after ejaculation. We found that fluctuations of testosterone levels from day 2 to day 5 of abstinence were minimal. On day 7 of abstinence, a peak of serum testosterone appeared, reaching 145.7% of the baseline (P<0.01). After the peak, no regular fluctuation was observed. Ejaculation was the premise and beginning of the 7 days' periodic phenomenon. If there was no ejaculation, there was no periodical changes in serum testosterone level. These results indicate that the periodic change in serum testosterone level is caused by ejaculation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether short-term amino acid supplementation could maintain a short-term net anabolic hormonal profile and decrease muscle cell damage during a period of high-intensity resistance training (overreaching), thereby enhancing recovery and decreasing the risk of injury and illness. Eight previously resistance trained males were randomly assigned to either a high branched chain amino acids (BCAA) or placebo group. Subjects consumed the supplement for 3 weeks before commencing a fourth week of supplementation with concomitant high-intensity total-body resistance training (overreaching) (3 x 6-8 repetitions maximum, 8 exercises). Blood was drawn prior to and after supplementation, then again after 2 and 4 days of training. Serum was analyzed for testosterone, cortisol, and creatine kinase. Serum testosterone levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001), and cortisol and creatine kinase levels were significantly lower (p < 0.001, and p = 0.004, respectively) in the BCAA group during and following resistance training. These findings suggest that short-term amino acid supplementation, which is high in BCAA, may produce a net anabolic hormonal profile while attenuating training-induced increases in muscle tissue damage. Athletes' nutrient intake, which periodically increases amino acid intake to reflect the increased need for recovery during periods of overreaching, may increase subsequent competitive performance while decreasing the risk of injury or illness.

Jeg har kun nogle relativt gamle studier der undersøger sammenhæng mellem sex og testosteron-niveau. Samtidig har jeg set artikler der med en evidensbaseret tilgang forsøger at forklarer sammenhængen mellen nogen af de ting jeg forsøger at forklare nedenunder. Det er via disse jeg har fundet størstedelen af studierne. Jeg ved dog ikke om jeg må linke direkte til artiklerne. Nedenstående er derfor kraftigt inspireret af disse.

Kort refereret observerede studiet det højeste test-niveau efter 7 dage med afholdenhed fra ejakulation. Herefter begyndte en tilbagegang i test-niveauet, hvilket ifølge forskerne sandsynligvis skyldes en reduceret produktion af leutinizing hormone (negativ feedback fra det højere testosteron-niveau), som stimulerer testiklerne til at producere testosteron.
Alligevel giver ovenstående ikke nogen guidelines for, hvordan man bør anskue sex i forbindelse med træningen, da det overordnede billede er langt mere avanceret.
Eksempelvis viser studier også at sex medfører øget tyndhed blandt mænd, og øget tyndhed betyder igen højere produktion af testosteron. Andre igen viser at sexuel stimuli medfører højere testosteron produktion. Derudover viser andre studier at ejakulation har positiv effekt på immunforsvaret og kan øge restitutionsevnen ved hjælp af noget studiet referer til som killer cells. Alt i alt er det altså et utroligt avanceret emne, der på ingen måde kan besvares kort og entydigt. Samtidig tror jeg ikke at der er forsket specielt meget i området endnu, hvilket naturligvis bidrager til den manglende viden.

I examined the relationship of recalled and diary recorded frequency of penile-vaginal intercourse (FSI), noncoital partnered sexual activity, and masturbation to measured waist and hip circumference in 120 healthy adults aged 19-38. Slimmer waist (in men and in the sexes combined) and slimmer hips (in men and women) were associated with greater FSI. Slimmer waist and hips were associated with rated importance of intercourse for men. Noncoital partnered sexual activity had a less consistent association with slimness. Slimmer waist and hips were associated with less masturbation (in men and in the sexes combined). I discuss the results in terms of differences between different sexual behaviors, attractiveness, emotional relatedness, physical sensitivity, sexual dysfunction, sociobiology, psychopharmacological aspects of excess fat and carbohydrate consumption, and implications for sex therapy."
